Nine Mile Creek Broken Hill

Red Earth

Spending time in Broken Hill and the surrounding area with other artists, gathering reference materials and being inspired, challenged and encouraged by these companions culminated in this body of work ‘Red Earth’, shown in a joint exhibition with Alan Healy at Nolan on Lovel Gallery in May/June 2016.

I started the paintings, on canvas and paper, outdoors and worked in an improvised and gestural way, totally engaged in the process of using local materials and paint and drawing on my response to the physicality of the land. Working back in the studio, the original gesture remains and even though it gets covered in more layers the traces always influence the final outcome.
